Maria Sharapova garnered her first two wins this year by beating Anastasiya Yakimova 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of the French Open and getting past Nadia Petrova 6-2, 1-6, 8-6 in the second round tournament action. Sharapova has seen little time on the court this season due to a right shoulder injury, but it appears, based on her performance this week, that the surgery she underwent on the ailment is paying dividends.
Sharapova's time off has cost her in the world rankings, dropping her all the way to 102. However, given her track record, it will not take her long to return to the top 10 once she is fully healthy.
This is the 22 year old's seventh French Open but, despite having three Grand Slam titles, she has never made it past the semi-finals at the Roland Garros.
Challenging Sharapova is fellow Russian, Yaroslava Shvedova. Shvedova, who turned pro in 2005, is playing in her third French Open. The 21 year old is 3-4 in singles play this year after beating Kaia Kanepi (7-6, 3-6, 6-2) and Arantxa Rus (6-0, 6-2) in rounds one and two of Paris play. The 2009 French Open marks the first time that Shvedova has made it past the second round in a Grand Slam event.
Shvedova, who has one career singles title, is 21-34 in her professional tennis career.
Sharapova and Shvedova are set to play at 8:30am ET on Friday, May 29th on the Philippe Chatrier Court.
