Serena Williams, who is shooting for her 11th career Grand Slam title, advanced to the third round of play at the Roland Garros by beating Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain 6-2, 6-0 in yesterday's second round. Williams was not pleased with her first round effort, a three set 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 win over Klara Zakopalova, but inidcated that she felt better about what transpired against Pascual.
"Everything clicked for me [yesterday], finally. I'm not nearly as upset as I was the other day," Williams said. "[Yesterday] I came out feeling like I had no pressure on me and I just did the best I could."
Williams, who won the Australian Open in January, has 33 career singles titles. Among those titles is a 2002 French Open championship.
Facing Williams tomorrow is Maria Jose Martinez. Martinez has needed three sets in each of the first two rounds to advance, but has done so nonetheless. She overcame Ukranian Viktoriya Kutuzova in yesterday' action, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to get to the third round of a Grand Slam event for just the third time in her career.
Martinez, who is currently the 43rd ranked women's singles player, won her first career singles title earlier this year at Bogota.
