French Open 2009: Maria Sharapova will continue her quest for her first French Open title tomorrow morning when she squares off against Na Li of China. Maria Sharapova continued her comeback yesterday by scoring a three sets victory over Yardslava Shvedova. The 22 year old Russian was clearly still rusty in the 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 match, committing 51 unforced errors and 11 double faults, but she was able to get by Shvedova on the strength of 26 winners.
Sharapova, who underwent shoulder surgery earlier this year, feels lucky to be where she is considering she has only played in six matches this year. But she knows she has to step it up to have a shot at her first Roland Garros crown.
"I just think I'm taking a really long time to adjust to everything," Sharapova said. "You know, I definitely have to speed that up and change it in order to get any further in this tournament. It's only going to get tougher from here…I just have to cut those errors and make [my] shots."
Sharapova has 19 singles titles and three Grand Slams to her credit. The French Open remains the only Grand Slam event that she has not won.
Facing Sharapova tomorrow is 27 year old Na Li. Li, who did not play in the French Open in 2008, was eliminated at the Roland Garros in the third round in 2006 and 2007. She does not have any Grand Slam titles, but does have two singles titles on record.
Li (currently ranked 25th in the WTP) advanced to the fourth round after beating Olga Govortsova 7-5, 6-1. The win was the third straight sets victory for Li in the 2009 French Open. Li, who committed just 17 unforced errors against Govortsova, has to feel like she has the upper hand against Sharapova if she plays a smart, sound tennis match tomorrow.
