Fernando Verdasco improved his 2009 singles record to 26-8 yesterday as he beat his fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro in straight sets 6-2, 7-6, 7-6. Through the first three rounds of action, Verdasco has needed no more than three sets to put his oppostion out of the tournament.
The left handed Vardasco, who advanced to the fourth round of the French Open for a third consecutive year, had three aces against Almagro, but he racked up four double faults as well. He also had 36 unforced errors, but overcame his mistakes by recording 36 winners.
Time has appeared to be of the essence to Verdasco throughout the tournament, and it was no different when faced Almagro. Their match lasted a meager 167 minutes. According to the world's eighth ranked player, this was no accident.
"I…try to save my energy so that is what I tried to do [yesterday]," Verdasco said. "I wanted to win, obviously, but I also wanted to win as quickly as possible, not using too much energy so that I reached the other rounds in good shape, so that I can play 100 percent later on."
Nikolay Davydenko, currently ranked 11th in the world, needed four sets to dispatch his third round opponent, Stanislas Wawrinka. However, he recorded the 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win in 177 minutes. Davydenko did not have a great day serving (two aces, three double faults), but he did produce 30 winners and he won 40 percent of his receiving point opportunities.
Davydenko has never won a Grand Slam title, but he has a history of performing well at the French Open. The Russian has been to the semi-finals at the Roland Garros in two of his last four French Open appearances.
