Andy Murray reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event for just the third time in his professional career by beating Marin Cilic in straight sets 7-5, 7-6, 6-1 yesterday at the Roland Garros. The native of Scotland used his serve to get the better of Cilic, recording 10 aces to just one double fault. Murray also overcame 41 winner by the Croatian by committing just 14 unforced errors.
Murray, who is not known for his clay court prowess, is pleased with how his game on the surface is developing.
"I'm playing well…I mean, you don't get to the quarters of the French [Open] not playing good clay court tennis," Murray said. "You know, this clay court season has been good. I made the semis in Monte-Carlo and the quarters in Madrid and now the quarters here at least."
Fernando Gonzalez, the world's 12th ranked player, advanced to the quarterfinals at the French Open for the second consecutive year and for the third time in his career. Gonzalez took out Romanian Victor Hanescu, who had upset Frenchman Gilles Simon in the third round, in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, 6-2. The 28 year old recorded an amazing 50 winners in the match and had just 16 unforced errors.
If the native of Santiago, Chile can win the French Open, it will be his 12th career singles title and his first Grand Slam.
