Nikolay Davydenko made it to the quarterfinals of the French Open for the fourth time in his last five visits to Roland Garros. Davydenko bested the ATP's eighth ranked men's singles player, Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.
Davydenko had just six unforced errors in the match to go with 24 winners. He also won 90 percent of his net approaches and 83 percent of the time on his first serve.
Davydenko was stunned by Robin Soderling's defeat of Rafael Nadal, but was pleased with the development as he will now face the Swede instead of the four-time French Open champion. Davydenko prefers Soderling's more sedentary style over Nadal's quick pace.
"Against [Soderling] I don't needs to run so much, you know, play [such] long [rallies]," Davydenko said. "It can be short points. I don't know [if] I have chance to win against Soderling or not, but I can hold match. We play short games. We always have power in our play again, again."
Robin Soderling shocked the tennis world yesterday by getting past Nadal in four sets, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6. Soderling's advancement to the quarterfinals marks the furthest the 24 year old has ever been in a Grand Slam.
Soderling was not without error in the match as he committed 59 unforced mistakes, but his 61 winners and nine aces were too much for the defending champion to overcome.
The Swede inidcated that he will never forget yesterday's glorious accomplishment, but that he was not ready to celebrate quite yet.
"[That was] the biggest moment of my career so far," Soderling said. "[But], you know, I also want to try to concentrate on the next matches. There's one more match to go against a great player, so I don't want to feel too happy."
