Roland Garros 2009: Dinara Safina vs Victoria Azarenka Betting Odds at online bookmaker BetUS.com have the No. 1 ranked Russian listed as a -500 money line favorite in h
er Roland Garros 2009 quarterfinals match with Azarenka.
Dinara Safina looks to be in prime form to secure the first Grand Slam title of her career. The 23 year old Russian made easy work of another opponent as she smashed her way to a fourth consecutive straight sets win at the French Open. Safina beat Aravane Rezai of France 6-1, 6-0 in yesterday's fourth round.
Safina said she feels more comfortable being the top ranked woman's player; she indicated her anticipation at being moved into the top spot earlier in the year had a negative effect on her game.
"I think I'm playing better and better. I think it was a moment for me, like the beginning of the year when I was about to become No. 1 with Serena, we were challenging," Safina said. "It was too much pressure for me. It was always going onto the court not to lose a match, and of course it's always difficult to play when you step on the court and you're afraid of losing. Then you don't even play your game. So I think once I got to the No. 1 spot, I took it off my shoulders. Now I just out there and play."
Facing the Russian in tomorrow's quarterfinals is Victoria Azaranka of Belarus. Azarenka, presently ninth in the WTP rankings, figures to be Safina's toughest French Open test thus far. The Minsk native improved her 2009 singles match record to 32-5 yesterday by beating Ana Ivanovic in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
Azarenka had just seven unforced errors in the victory and had an 81 percent first serve win percentage in making her way to the French Open quarterfinals for the first time.
