Serena Williams kept her bid for a third straight Grand Slam title alive yesterday by easily getting past Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Williams won the U.S. Open last year and took the Australian Open in January to record her ninth and 10th Grand Slam titles. The second ranked Williams had just eight unforced errors in the match and 25 winners to Wozniak's nine.
Williams dismissed her ranking and diverted any sense of pressure by throwing praise toward Kutnetsova.
"I'm just happy to still be here," Williams said. "She's (Kuznetsova) playing unbelievable on clay. Honestly, I feel like I have nothing to lose. I feel like it will be a really good match."
Svetlana Kuznetsova, the world's seventh ranked player, made it to the quarterfinals for the fourth straight year at the Roland Garros by beating 12th ranked Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. The 23 year old Russian had 17 more unforced errors than Radwanska and she had five double faults, but she recorded 19 more winners than the Polish native to get the match.
Williams has beat Kuznetsova in five of the six matches they have faced each other, but the Russian is considered Serena's equal on clay.
"I feel a little bit comfortable on clay than her," Kutznetsova said. "I have to try and use it to an advantage for myself."
