Australia's Samantha Stosur advanced to the semifinals at Roland Garros for the second straight year after beating top 
seeded Serena Williams 6-2, 6-7, 8-6. Williams had 13 aces to Stosur's six and 39 winners to the Aussie's 30; however, she also committed 46 unforced errors. Stosur had nearly half as many at 24 and she got the better of Williams on her second serve winning 58 percent compared to the American's 41.
Stosur, who has never reached the finals at a major, lost to eventual champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 4-6, 7-6, 3-6 in last year's French Open semifinals. She is 1-3 in four career meetings with Jankovic, but the pair have never faced each other on a clay surface.
Jelena Jankovic reached the semifinals at the French Open for the third time in the last four years by scoring a straight sets quarterfinals victory over Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova. Jankovic, who is currently fourth in the WTP's singles rankings, won the match 7-5, 6-4 in much the same way that Stosur overcame Williams. Shevdova had 11 more winners, but she also committed 25 unforced errors to Jankovic's 17.
Jankovic also took advantage of her second serve, winning at a 50 percent rate while Shevdova managed to win just 37 percent of her second opportunities.
Jankovic has reached the finals just one time in 27 career Grand Slam appearances. The 25 year old Serbian lost to Serena Williams in the championship match at the 2008 U.S. Open.
