Dinara Safina's quest for her first Grand Slam title continued yesterday as she beat Victoria Azarenka in three sets 1-6, 6-4, 6-2. The win, which was the first in the 2009 French Open to require more than two sets from Safina, was not exactly pretty for the 23 year old. Safina had six fewer winners than Azarenka and she also committed 26 unforced errors and six double faults.
The top ranked Russian was not pleased with her play in the first set and hopes to get a better start against Cibulkova, who she lost to earlier this year.
"She (Azarenka) was playing well, and basically I was not doing anything to complicate it," Safina said. "I was playing exactly in her zone: everything in the middle, and I was running forehand [and] backhand. I hope I just play my game from the next match."
Dominika Cibulkova, the WTP's 19th ranked player, advanced to the semi-finals by beating Maria Sharapova in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. The Slovakian, who has never been this far in a major, took advantage of 27 unforced errors on the part of Sharapova and won 62 percent of her receiving points.
The 20 year old indicated she wanted to dictate the pace of the match and keep it uptempo for the more power oriented Sharapova.
"I'm quick and fast on the court," Cibulkova said. "It was my tactic, you know, to play close to the baseline and…to make her move and not be scared of her first, two, three…fast shots. I knew if I managed to put it back, then [I'd] have my chances."
