Robin Soderling, not content with beating Rafael Nadal, won in straight sets in yesterday's quarterfinal match against Nikolay Davydenko 6-1, 6-3, 6-1. The 25th ranked Swede had four aces, but really took adavantage of the Russian with his superb placement, hitting 34 winners to Davydenko's 15.
Soderling's play could mean trouble for his opponents in the near future as his belief in his skill set continues to increase.
"I always knew I could play really, really good tennis when I'm on top of my game," Soderling said. "The thing that I am most happy with is that I played very well now, not only for this tournament, I played well last week as well…my confidence is getting better and better."
Fernando Gonzalez made his second semi-final in a major by beating the world's third ranked player, Andy Murray, in four sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4. Gonzalez, who is the ATP's 12 ranked player, used a brillant forehand to score 45 winners and he also won 74 percent of the time on his first serve.
Gonzalez, who made the quarterfinals at the French Open last year, was surprised not to see Nadal in the semis, but he anticpates Soderling will present a difficult challenge as well.
"When you get to the French Open, when you say French Open, you think Nadal immediately," Gonzalez said. "But Robin is a great player. I mean, he hit the ball harder than most of the guys. If he's [having] a good day he doesn't let you play, so it's gonna be a really tough match for me."
