Russina Svetlana Kuznetsova upset second ranked Serena Williams to make it to the semi-finals of a Grand Slam for the fifth time in her career. The 23 year old won the match 7-6, 5-7, 7-5 despite hitting just 33 winners to Williams' 44.
The seventh ranked Kuznetsova will now face Australian Samantha Stosur in tomorrow's semi-final match. Kuznetsova has not played Stosur in several years, but is excited nonetheless.
"I'm looking forward to playing Sam," Kuznetsova said. "She plays good. She wouldn't have any pressure tomorrow because she has nothing to lose. But myself, I don't want to put myself as the favorite. She also beat very good players."
Stosur, who has never been this far in a major, advanced by beating Sorana Cristea in yesterday's quarterfinal 6-1, 6-3. The Aussie had 23 winners to Cristea's 12 and she won 52 percent of her receiving points.
The 25 year old, who missed nearly a year of action after being diagnosed with Lyme Disease, has grown to trust her abilities on the clay at Roland Garros.
"Over the last few years, I've really started to learn a lot better how to use my game on this surface," Stosur said. "It's a good surface for me, I think. It took me a little while to realize that and to believe it and trust that my game matched up well with the clay."
