Rafael Nadal fought through a grueling three set match against fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro on Tuesday to reach the 
semifinals at Roland Garros for the fifth time in six years. Nadal won 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 after landing 73 percent of his first serves in play. The 24 year old Manacor native had 34 unforced errors to Almagro's 44, but the latter had three more winners (37 to 34) in the evenly played affair.
Nadal, who is seeking his fourth straight singles title to complete the clay slam, is 2-0 in two career meetings with Melzer. The pair last played on the clay in Madrid in 2009 with Rafa scoring a 6-3, 6-1 straight sets victory.
Nadal will take over the ATP's No. 1 ranking if he is able to defeat Melzer a third time and overcome either Soderling or Berdych in the final to win his fifth French Open and seventh Grand Slam title.
Jurgen Melzer, who is competing in his eighth French Open, reached the semifinals for the first time at a major by upsetting three seed Novak Djokovic 3-6, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Melzer had nine aces and 59 winners in the marathon match, which also saw Djokovic committ 62 unforced errors.
Not only is this the 29 year old Melzer's first appearance in the semifinals at a Grand Slam, his current run at Roland Garros marks the first time that he has made it past the third round at a major.
