While certainly not the final many envisioned, the two top 20 players should put on a good show for tennis fans across the globe. After using three sets to dispose of top-seed Serena Williams in the quarterfinals, seventh ranked Samantha Stosur 
mowed through Jelena Jankovic in 15 games or 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals. Stosur had it all working against the Serbian, scoring seven aces and 18 winners while Jankovic committed 22 unforced errors and managed just nine winners. The 26 year old Aussie also gained a decided edge in receiving points, winning 26 of her 46 opportunities compared to Jankovic's 18-of-51 tally.
Stosur's easy victory propelled her into to her first ever Grand Slam final. The Brisbane native's previous best at a major came at Roland Garros last year when she succumbed to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the semis.
While Stosur had little trouble in her semifinal match, Italy's Francesca Schiavone had an even easier time. The Milan resident, who was playing in her first ever semifinals at a Grand Slam, beat Russia's Elena Dementieva 7-6 (7-3) after the latter retired due to a leg injury. Dementieva, who is fifth in the WTP's women's singles rankings, was clearly off her game in the one set match as she committed 24 unforced errors and served into four double faults.
The 17th ranked Schiavone, who won 20 out of 27 first serves against Dementieva, is the first Italian woman to ever reach a Grand Slam final. She beat some of the world's best players in route to her historic achievement, including Dementieva, Denmark's Caoline Wozniacki, and China's Na Li.
Stosur is 4-1 in head-to-head meetings with Schiavone, which includes two clay court victories (2007 Rome, 2009 French Open). The pair last played on the hard courts of Osaka in 2009 with the Aussie scoring a 7-5, 6-1 win.
