2008 Wimbledon Betting Odds: Roger Federer favored to win

by Scott Burgess on Monday, June 23rd, 2008

It’s that time of year again for the 2008 Wimbledon, which takes place June 23-July 6, at the All England Lawn Tennis Club, in London England. Roger Federer has been announced as the top seeded player followed by second seed Rafael Nadal and third seed Novak Djokovic. Federer will be trying for his sixth consecutive Wimbledon Title. Oddsmakers at Sportsbetting.com have Roger Federer as 1/1 odds favorite to win the 2008 Wimbledon for the sixth time. Get your 2008 Wimbledon Prediction in now at Sportsbetting.com

There’s no surprise that Roger Federer is number one at this year’s Wimbledon, where he is a five time consecutive winner and considered the best grass court player ever. He is currently tied with Bjorn Borg for the most Wimbledon Titles, one more and he’s all-time champ. Nadal may have beaten him in straight sets at the 2008 French Open this month, but at Wimbledon, Federer has won the last two finals over Nadal. Federers last loss at the All England Club was in 2002 when he lost to Mario Ancic in the first round. Since then he has been undefeated here in 35 matches, winning 102 sets and losing just eight, and 671 games to 394. Federer has been defeated by six players on the ATP circuit this year and he’s only won one tournament this year, the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany. Federer judged against his own high standards, has had a disappointing year. Oddsmakers at Sportbetting.com still favor Roger Federer at 1/1 odds to win Wimbledon.

Rafael Nadal lost to Federer in the 2007 final last year 7-6 (9-7) 4-6 7-6 (7-3) 2-6 6-2 in a grueling three hour and 45 minute match. The year before that Nadal lost Federer in four sets, so the Spaniard is improving on grass. Especially after his dominance of Federer at the 2008 French Open, Nadal must feel he can get closer to his first Wimbledon Title this year. Nadal is 3-0 against Federer this year but all his wins have been on clay. Rafael Nadal is listed at 2/1 odds to win.

Novak Djokovic, the Australian Open champion, has beaten Federer twice in the past 12 months. He beat him in the final of the Australian Open, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6, and in the final at the 2007 ATP Masters Series Canada. They last faced each other at the 2008 ATP Masters Series Monte Carlo which Djokovic had to retire from in the second set. Novak Djokovic is listed at 3/1 odds to win.

Sixth seed Andy Roddick, twice runner up, is one of the strongest grass court players on the circuit. He’s played in seven Wimbledon’s and he made the finals in 2004-05. He lost in the quarter finals last year and is 26-6 on the circuit this year. Andy Roddick is listed at 15/1 odds to win.
