Robert Kendrick has a career 15-28 singles record with no Titles. He has nine Challengers Circuit wins dating back to 2002. At the 2009 Australian Open he was eliminated in the first round by Robin Söderling, 7-5, 4-6, 4-6, 5-7, and at the 2009 French Open he was defeated in the second round where he lost 5-7, 0-6, 1-6 to Gilles Simon. His best performance at a Grand Slam event was in 2006 when he almost beat Raphael Nadal. Ranked 237 in the world, Kendrick employed a serve and volley style of play that appeared to frustrate Nadal for almost three sets. Kendrick's serving impressed many, as he served twenty-eight aces, compared to Nadal's seven. After the match, a commentator for BBC Sport exclaimed that it was "the match of the tournament so far". Kendrick was the only player in the tournament to take sets off Nadal on the Spaniard's route to the final.

Andy Murray has been up graded to second seed after Nadal pulled out with knee problems. Andy has 12 career Titles with four this year. Murray started 2009 by beating James Blake, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal, to win the 2009 Capitala World Tennis Championship . He followed this with a title defense at the Qatar Open in Doha, defeating Andy Roddick in the final. Murray won his next tournament, the ABN AMRO Tournament, beating World No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the final. Murray started the grass court season with a win at the AEGON Championships, Queen's Club. At the 2009 Australian Open Murray lost in the fourth round to Fernando Verdasco, many considered him to be the Federer killer at the Open. At the 2009 French Open he lost in the quarter-finals to the 12th seed Fernando Gonzalez, in four sets, 6-3 3-6 6-0 6-4. Murray has an offensive and defensive baseline playing style and can hit fundamental shots from anywhere on the court. He is well-known for his defensive capabilities and can turn a defense shot into an aggressive one. He now has a reputation for being one of the fittest men on the tour even rivaling that of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
