2009 Wimbledon Odds: Old will meet young tomorrow morning when Argentin phenom Juan Martin Del Potro (number five in the ATP rankings) squares off against 31 year old Frenchman Arnuad Clement. Juan Martin Del Potro, the 20 year old from Tandil, Argentina, enters tomorrow's match with a 2009 record of 31-9. He has one singles title this season (Auckland, New Zealand) and five in his brief, but thus far, brilliant career. Del Potro, who was defeated in the semi-finals at Roland Garros 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, 1-6, 4-6 by Roger Federer, has made it to the quarterfinals or better in nine of the 11 tournaments he has entered this season.
The 6'6" South American, who has been to at least the quarterfinals in his last three Grand Slams, will be making his third appearance at Wimbledon when things get underway tomorrow. He was eliminated in the second round in both of his previous Wimbledon outings.
Arnaud Clement, presently ranked 53rd in men's singles by the ATP, is 7-13 this year with no titles. For his career, Clement is 285-283 with four singles titles. The Geneva, Switzerland resident will be making his 13th Wimbledon appearance when he faces Del Potro on Court 1.
Clement had his best showing at the All England Lawn Tennis Championships last year when he reached the quarterfinals. The French veteran, who at one time was ranked 10th in men's singles, has been eliminated in the first round at Wimbledon four times.
Clement, who has played in 46 Grand Slams, won the Doubles title at Wimbledon in 2007 with partner Michael Llodra.
Del Potro and Clement are scheduled to begin play at 7:00am Central Daylight Time.
