Fernando Verdasco, the 25 year old from Madrid, advanced to the second round at Wimbledon for the fifth straight year as he beat James Ward of Great Britain in straight sets Monday 6-1, 6-3, 6-4. The left handed Verdasco had 15 aces and 36 winners in the match while also getting 81 percent of his first serves in play.
The Spaniard, who is appearing in his 25th Grand Slam, is now 28-11 on the year. He has made it to the third round at Wimbledon the last three years. Verdasco appeared in the semi-finals at the Australian Open back in January and he reached the fourth round at Roland Garros last month.
Kristof Vliegen advanced to the second round for the third time in five appearances at the All England Lawn Tennis Championships by dispatching Nicolas Mahut of France in Monday's first round action. The 27 year old Vliegen needed five sets (6-3, 7-6, 5-7, 5-7, 6-4) to move on; he scored 23 aces in the hard fought win and also hit 78 winners.
Vliegen, who is appearing in his 18th Grand Slam, has never made it past the second round at Wimbledon. He has reached the third round in a major just two times in his career (2006 Australian Open, 2007 Roland Garros).
Verdasco and Vliegen will square off at approximately 7:30am tomorrow morning on Court 3.
