Federer breezed by Robin Soderling 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 in a quick 2hr match that Federer could have won with one arm tied behind his back. Federers serve may not be the fastest and hardest, but it sure demands a skilled returner to get it back to his side of the court. His forehand is the best in the business, he hits it with such power and spin that it appears to be heading for the backstop until it suddenly slams on the brakes, dips grass wards and lands plumb in the corner. His play at Wimbledon is spot on for a sixth Championship. Federer faces Marc Gicquel who he’s played once, he met him at the 2006 U.S. Open in which Federer beat him 6-3 7-6(2) 6-3 in the round of 16. Federer is 37-8 this year with two Titles and he extended his grass court record to 61-0.
Marc Gicquel is a little known player with no titles and a 55-55 career record. At the 2008 Australian Open he was defeated in the third round, at the 2008 French Open he lost in the second round and at last year’s Wimbledon he was knocked out in the first round. He was a finalist in the 2008 s-Hertogenbosch Open but lost to David Ferrer. Here’s a funny little tidbit for you, in a match in 2007 Gicquel was struck directly in the genitals by a 129mph serve. He went on to beat win, but spent most of the night vomiting and in pain due to swelling and was forced to retire in his next match. Ouch! Gicquel is 12-13 this year with no titles.
