Rafael Nadal needed five sets to get out of a round for the second consecutive match as Philipp Petzschner took the
number one ranked player to the limit on Saturday. Nadal eventually prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, 6-3, but he had to endure 25 aces and 63 winners from the 33rd ranked German. Nadal managed 12 aces and 56 winners of his own and he played a far cleaner match, committing just 18 unforced errors to Petzschner's 40.
The 24 year old Nadal, who improved his record to 43-5 on the year with the victory, has reached the championship match in his last three apperances at Wimbledon. The Spaniard won The Championships in 2008, beating Roger Federer 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 9-7 in the final.
Paul-Henri Mathieu advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon for just the second time in eight showings at the event with a third round win over Thiemo De Bakker 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (8-10), 6-4. Mathieu survived 32 aces and 63 winners from De Bakker because he outperformed the Netherlands product on the second serve, winning 42 of his 67 opportunities (De Bakker just 30 of 60).
Nadal is 9-0 against Mathieu for his career with the latest conquest coming at the Western and Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati last year. The two have met twice at Grand Slams as Nadal won 6-4, 3-0, RET at the 2008 Australian Open and 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 at the 2006 French Open.
