The 30th-seeded Roddick defeated Bjorn Phau of Germany in straight sets 6-3, 7-6(1), 6-3 in the second round at the All England Club on Thursday. Roddick bombarded seven aces on his opponent’s court and conceded only one double fault in the second set. The American took two hours and two minutes to clinch victory in a one sided match.
In his opening match Roddick needed two days to beat Scotland’s Jamie Baker, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 7-5, in a match that was suspended because of rain on Tuesday. The American advanced in three hours with the help of 14 aces and was not broken in the predictable match.
Commenting on the Spaniard, Roddick said, “I think he’s won an insane amount of matches this year. I think it’s 44 or something that I was reading last week. We both won on grass last week in the lead up (Ferrer won at the UNICEF Open).”
He added, “I think it will be a high level. You have to play well too beat David. He just doesn’t give you anything I have a ton of respect for him, the way he goes about his business, and what he gets out of himself is pretty impressive. I’m going to have to play really well.”
David Ferrer took on, 6’8 lefty Frenchman, Kenny De Schepper. De Schepper troubled the Spaniard at first, pushing the first set into a tiebreak, but Ferrer dominated the tiebreak and didn’t struggle at all after that, winning 7-6 (7-1), 6-2, 6-4.
World No. 6 David Ferrer lifted his fourth trophy of the season at the UNICEP Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, defeating qualifier Philipp Petzschner 6-3, 6-4. “I’m very, very happy. I’ve won two times here,” said Ferrer, who also won the 2008 title. “This is special for me because grass is maybe my worst surface.”
Head to Head: Ferrer leads Roddick 6-4, but have never met on grass.
The Bottom Line: Roddick will have to be at his best as the speedy Ferrer can get to any return. Roddick needs his serve to be powerful and precise.
