2009 Wimbledon: Russian Elena Dementieva is working to secure her first Grand Slam title, but she will have to get past former Wimbledon champion Serena Williams in tomorrow morning's semifinal round to do so. Elena Dementieva advanced to the Wimbledon semifinals for the second year in a row by beating Italian Francesca Schiavone in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 on Tuesday. The 27 year old did not have the best of matches, but won 82 percent of her first serve opportunities to get the win. The Moscow native, who has appeared in the semifinals in four of the last five majors, is now 39-10 this year in singles play.

Dementieva met Serena Williams back in January in the semifinals of the Australian Open, losing 6-3, 6-4. The world's fourth ranked player is looking forward to another meeting with the younger Williams sister, but is hoping for a different result than the one Venus handed her in last year's Wimbledon semis.

"I think it's always very interesting to play against someone like Serena," Dementieva said. "She's a great champion, and it's gonna be a good experience for me anyway. So I'm just — I just want to see, you know, how tough I can be out there against her."

Serena Williams, who won the Australian Open in January, got one step closer to her 14th Grand Slam finals appearance by getting the better of eighth ranked Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 6-3. Williams had nine aces and 26 winners in the lopsided win. 

Williams has now been to the semifinals in six of her 10 Wimbledon appearances. She has been ousted in the semifinal round just one time, that coming back in 2000.

Serena, who has played Dementieva three times this year (one win, two losses), knows that the Russian will present a big challenge to her finals hopes.

"I've played her alot the past 12 months, so I definitely know Elena's game," Williams said. "She gets a lot of balls back, and she's power player. You know, it will be a really good matchup to me. She's playing really well on the grass."

Tomorrow's match between the two top five players is set to begin at approximately 7:00am CDT tomorrow morning.
