No.4 Andy Murray reached the quarter-finals at The Championships for a fifth straight year on Tuesday with a 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 victory over No. 16 Marin Cilic of Croatia on Court One. The pair resumed the match at 7-5, 3-1, 40/0.
In a match carried over from Monday, due to rain, Murray hit 16 aces and 35 winners for victory in two hours and 10 minutes. The 25-year-old Scot saved seven of eight break point opportunities for his 30th match win of the season (30-9 overall).
Andy Murray’s thought’s on playing David Ferrer. “To me he’s not a clay-court specialist,” said Murray. “He won last week on grass [at the UNICEF Open in ‘s-Hertogenbosch], so he’s won, what, eight matches in a row on the grass. He’s been in the semi-finals of Australia, I think semi-finals of US Open, as well, and now he’s starting to play better on grass. I don’t see him as a clay-court specialist at all.”
No.5 David Ferrer defeated ninth seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 in one hour and 58 minutes on Centre Court. Ferrer won 17 of his 19 points at the net, while he lost just 18 points on serve.
“Today was one of my best matches [on a grass] court,” said Ferrer. “But I’m not sure if is my best or not. At Wimbledon, there is a lot of wind. On [an] indoor court, [under a] roof, it is easier for to play. The ball does not move and this is more comfortable for us.”
The 30 year old, making his 10th appearance at Wimbledon, improved to a 47-8 match record on the season. David Ferrer became the sixth Spanish man to reach the quarterfinals since 1968 after Andres Gimeno (1970), Manuel Orantes (1972), Feliciano Lopez (2005, 2008, 2011), Rafael Nadal (2006-08, 2010-11) and Juan Carlos Ferrero (2007, 2009).
Head to Head: tied at 5-5, but Ferrer has won two straight matchups.
2012 Roland Garros France Clay Q Ferrer, David 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-2
2011 Barclays ATP World Tour Finals Great Britain Hard RR Ferrer, David 6-4, 7-5
The Bottom Line: Ferrer has a great chance to win, but fans will be rooting for Murray, which gives him that extra edge.
