No.1 Novak Djokovic required just 90 minutes Monday to defeat his fellow Serbian, Viktor Troicki, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3, on Centre Court at Wimbledon. Djokovic hit 31 winners and converted six of his eight break point opportunities to record his 12th straight win in 13 meetings over his childhood friend Troicki, who committed 15 unforced errors. The 25-year-old Djokovic improved to a 40-6 match record on the 2012 season.
“At the start, I needed some time to get the rhythm and to kind of figure out where he’s going to serve because he has a big first serve,” said Djokovic. “But I returned really well. I served great. The baseline game, I was patient and waiting for a chance to be aggressive. Everything was quite compact, and I’m satisfied.”
No.29 Florian Mayer reached the quarter-finals for the second time after he hit 60 winners past 2007 semi-finalist and No. 16 seed Richard Gasquet of France. Mayer, the 2004 quarter-finalist (l. to Grosjean), won 6-3, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. The match re-started on Court 3 with Mayer leading 6-3, 2-1. Mayer saved two match points in his third round win over Jerzy Janowicz.
“Today, I played perfect match,” said Mayer. “I really played well. [For the] first time in this tournament, I felt no pressure going on the court. I played a guy Top 15 in the world. He was the favourite. I played with less pressure than the matches before and my performance was much better than the last two rounds.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling for me right now. Eight years ago I was here in quarter[-finals], and now eight years later [here I am] again. So it’s a wonderful dream for me.”
