Novak Djokovic is bidding to win his sixth Grand Slam championship title and become the first player to retain the Wimbledon title since Federer in 2007. He dismissed Florian Mayer of Germany 6-4, 6-1, 6-4 on Wednesday. The Serb has dropped only one set in five matches to reach the final set, taking four sets to defeat Radek Stepanek in the third round. He has won both his meetings with Federer this season, including one month ago in straight sets in the Roland Garros semi-finals.

“It is a challenge when you play Roger and Rafa or any of the top players,” said Djokovic. “Roger has been on the top of the men’s game for so long. This is where he won six titles. He definitely wants to prove himself and to everybody else that he can win it once again.

“Today he won incredibly fast, in straight sets, so we’ll see. I’m playing well, I believe. We both have to play at our best in order to get a win. I really have nothing to lose. I’m going to try to win.”

Roger Federer is attempting to become the first man to reach eight Wimbledon finals. He cruised past No. 26 seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday for a place in the semi-finals against Djokovic.

Looking ahead to Friday’s semi-final against Djokovic, Federer said, “It is interesting that this is our first grass court match. I’m looking forward to it. It’s been a good tournament so far for me. I’m happy [that] I’m feeling good again. It gives me confidence going into a big match against Novak.”

If Federer beats Djokovic and goes onto lift his 17th major trophy he will regain No. 1 in the ATP Rankings. Federer has been World No. 1 for 285 weeks, one week shy of all-time record-holder Pete Sampras on 286 weeks. The pair has split their previous 10 Grand Slam matches, with Djokovic winning their most recent one in the Roland Garros semi-finals.

The Bottom Line: Roger has been playing incredibly well his last couple of matchups and I think he is ready to give Novak a run for his money. Go Federer.
