Andy Murray has become the first British man in 74 years to reach the Wimbledon final after beating France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 on Friday in the second semi-final at the All England Club. The last homegrown player to win the men’s singles title was Fred Perry in 1936.
Describing his emotions after the match, Murray said, “Bit of relief, excitement, it’s tough to explain. It was such a close match in the end; the last two sets both of us had chances. He had the break points at 4-4 and I managed to hang tough. I’m so happy to be through.”
Murray takes in an 8-7 lead over Federer in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series, but has never beaten the Swiss in a best-of-five-set encounter. The Swiss has won their past two meetings in straight sets, most recently in this year’s Dubai final.
“He’s obviously one of the greatest players ever to have played,” said Murray. “It’s a great challenge, one where I’m probably not expected to win the match, but one that, if I play well, I’m capable of winning. If you look at his record here over the past 10 years or so, it’s been incredible. So the pressure that I would be feeling if it was against somebody else I guess it would be different. But there will be less on me on Sunday because of who he is.
Roger Federer beat top seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the semi-finals. Roger Federer will attempt to regain the World No. 1 ranking by clinching a record-equalling seventh title at The Championships Sunday.
“Of course, there’s a lot on the line for me. I’m not denying that,” said Federer after ousting defending champion Novak Djokovic in Friday’s semi-finals. “I have a lot of pressure, as well. I’m looking forward to that. I’ve worked extremely hard since I lost that match point against Novak last year at the US Open. My run has been extremely good. Now I have a chance at world No. 1, at the title again all at once. It’s a big match for me and I hope I can keep my nerves. I’m sure I can. Then hopefully win the match.”
