Let's take at the top three favorites:

Roger Federer officially earned the right to be called the greatest player of all time as he set the all-time Grand Slam record of 15 major titles with a tight, hard-fought, five-set victory over Andy Roddick. The win, which also re-earned him the No. 1 world ranking, came just a few short weeks after the great Swiss tied the record when he completed the career Grand Slam with his first French Open title. Federer attempts to become the first man since Bill Tilden in the 1920s to win six consecutive US Opens. He enters Flushing Meadows as the favorite after a dominating victory at the Western and Southern Financial Group Masters that included wins over both Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic. Federer has defeated Roddick, Djokovic and Murray in the finals in straight years as part of his five-year title run, with none of the matches in those five years even going to five sets.

Andy Murray is red hot right now and probably the best player who can compete with Federer. At the 2008 Open Murray got his best result making it into the final only to lose to Federer in straight sets. He put on a show at this year’s Wimbledon. Murray beat wildcard entry Juan Carlos Ferrero in the quarterfinals before falling to sixth-seeded Roddick in the semifinals. This was the furthest Murray had ever reached at Wimbledon as he still seeks his first Major win. We could see Murray in the final.  But to get there, Murray will likely have to get past Nadal. Murray beat Nadal in the semifinals of the 2008 US Open in a match played over two days because of rain. Before Nadal, Murray has another huge obstacle to overcome potentially in the quarterfinals in No. 6 Juan Martin del Potro, who reached the quarterfinals of the 2008 US Open. Andy Murray is listed at 5/2 odds to win the 2009 US Open.

Rafael Nadal is looking to win his first US Open and reach the final for the first time. His best finish at the US Open was in 2008 when he reached the Semi-finals. He’s coming off knee surgery that has seen him get a little rusty since having to sit out Wimbledon and the other US Open series tournaments. At the start of the 2009 tennis season, Nadal won his first ever Australian Open by defeating Federer and reducing him to tears. At the French Open, which Nadal owns, he finished a disappointing fourth literally handing the win to Federer. Nadal has trouble playing on hard courts. Nadal and Federer have played each other in 7 Grand Slam finals, with Nadal winning 5 of the 7 finals. Three of these 5 wins were on Nadal's best surface (clay), and he has beaten Federer twice in non-clay major finals: Wimbledon 2008 and the Australian Open 2009 Nadal leads their overall head-to-head series 13-7 (Nadal leads 9-2 on clay, Federer leads 2-1 on grass, nobody leads (3-3) on hard courts). Rafael Nadal is listed at 7/2 odds to win his first US Open Title.
