2011 US Open Preview & Odds

by Scott Burgess on Monday, August 29th, 2011

The 2011 US Open survived hurricane Irene and players are hitting the hard court, Monday August 29th, as they seek the last Major tennis title of the year. Oddsmakers are leaning towards Novak Djokovic as +140 moneyline favourite to win the 2011 US Open. Let’s take a look at the top favorites and some possible underdogs. Novak Djokovic (+140) his retirement in Cincinnati isn’t worrying anybody, as the world No. 1 is clear favorite to win the U.S. Open. What’s scaring the rest of the field is Djokovic’s 2011 record. The Serb is a ridiculous 57-2 with nine titles—including the Australian Open and Wimbledon. He is 34-1 on hard courts, and that lone loss to Andy Murray in the Cincinnati final has to come with an asterisk due to Djokovic’s shoulder issue. The only thing that stands in Djokovic’s way is Djokovic, himself—or, more specifically, his shoulder. Assuming he is 100 percent, count on his unbelievable season continuing with a third Grand Slam title.

Rafael Nadal (+400) has compiled a lackluster 2-2 match record during the current hard-court swing, but don’t discount him in New York. The second-ranked Spaniard also lost early in Canada and Cincinnati last season, but ended up winning the U.S. Open. With his burned fingers healing and his nemesis (Djokovic) maybe not quite 100 percent, Nadal has a chance to defend the title. He’s fast and not a quitter.

Andy Murray (+450) has been nothing short of bizarre. The Scot went into a funk for the ages after losing to Djokovic in the Australian Open final and he seemed headed down the same path after falling to Nadal in the Wimbledon semis. In time for the season’s final major, though, Murray woke up and won the Cincinnati title. Just like that, he goes from pretender to contender. Murray is still searching for his first Major title, but he has trouble late in Majors when facing his top 3 nemesis’s.

Roger Federer (+550) is getting old but is still just as deadly at this event. Still, his U.S. Open history cannot be overlooked. The Swiss has won five times in Flushing Meadows and has won 46 of his 48 matches at the event. Upset losses at Wimbledon and in the recent hard-court tournaments are a concern, but they are no reason for Federer or his fans to wave the white flag.

UNDERDOG PICK:
Mardy Fish (+3300) won—even dominated—the U.S. Open Series with a title in Atlanta, final appearances in Los Angeles and Montreal, and a semifinal in Cincinnati. He is not only America’s best hope, but he also has to be considered the biggest threat out of everyone in the field to steal the title away from the Big Four.
