match record and five singles titles in route to the number two men's singles ranking. Murray's play has not faded of late as he has won two of his last four events while reaching the semi-finals in the other two.
The 6'3" Murray has also been strong on the biggest stages, reaching the quarterfinals or better in four of the last five Grand Slams. Murray had his best showing at a major at last year's US Open as he succumbed to Roger Federer 6-2, 7-5, 6-2 in the final.
The 22 year Dunblane native last played on August 16th, losing to Federer 2-6, 6-7 in the semis of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Cincinnati.
Ernests Gulbis comes into tonight's match sporting a 13-20 match record this year. The 21 year old has no titles to his credit and has fallen from 38th in the men's singles rankings all the way to 95th.
Despite his struggles, the 21 year old Gulbis has made it out of the first round in all but two of the 10 Grand Slams he has entered. This evening's match will mark Gulbis third US Open; he reached the fourth round at Flushing in 2007 but suffered elimination in the second round last year.
Gulbis last played at the ATP Masters in Cincinnati as well, losing in the first qualifying round 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 to American Ram Rajeev.
