2009 US Open Odds: Maria Sharapova begins her quest for a fourth Grand Slam title this evening, facing off against 21 year old Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova. The two will meet at 6:00pm ET at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows. Maria Sharapova has proven that she is now over the shoulder injury
that sidelined her for the latter part of 2008 and the beginning of the 2009 season. While she has not added to her 19 single's titles this year, the 22 year old has gone 22-7.
Sharapova recorded her best finish of the season last month, reaching the finals in Toronto where she lost to Elena Dementieva 6-4, 6-3.
The Russian native, who is currently 31st in the WTA rankings, will make her fifth US Open appearance tonight. Sharapova reached the semifinals in 2005 and won the event in 2006. She did not participate in the 2008 Open.
Tsvetana Pironkova enters this evening's match with a 7-18 2009 record. For her career she is 51-70 with no single's titles.
This year's Open marks Pironkova's 15th Grand Slam; she has never been past the second round at a major. In three US Open appearances, the 21 year old has made it out of the first round one time.
Pironkova is coming off a 6-4, 2-6, 2-6 qualifying quarterfinal round loss at New Haven to Yanina Wickmayer. She has never faced Sharapova in a professional match.
