Andy Roddick needed two hours to get past No.31 seed Andreas Seppi, 6-2, 7-5, 7-6, in three straight sets. He pounded 19 aces past the Italian and his fastest serve was clocked at 140mph. Roddick is 29-7 all time at the US Open and 3-2 at this year’s Grand Slam events. Andy reached the final in 2006 and made the quarter-finals last year. He was the U.S. Open Champ back in 2003 when Federer was handed an early exit and there was no Rafael Nadal. He has reached three other Grand Slam finals (Wimbledon twice and the U.S. Open), losing to Roger Federer each time. Roddick is 34-10 SU this year with two titles, he won in San Jose and in Dubai. The quarterfinals will deliver a certifiably dangerous opponent. It would most likely be one of the following: Novak Djokovic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Marin Cilic.
Fernando Gonzalez defeated Jarkko Nieminen, 7-5, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1, in a grueling 2hr and 40 minute match. Gonzalez only had three aces and his fastest serve was clocked at 123mph. He won silver for Chile at the Beijing Olympics where he was defending bronze medalist. He beat American James Blake in the semifinals in a match marred by controversy over González failure to acknowledge a ball that video clearly showed struck his racket. In the gold medal match, he lost in straight sets to Spain's Rafael Nadal. His best Grand Slam appearance this year was a quarter final appearance at the French Open, he is 7-3 this year at Grand Slam events. At the 2007 US Open he was defeated in the first round.
