Roger Federer's quest for a 17th major title continued on Wednesday night as he defeated Sweden's Robin Soderling 6-4,
6-4, 7-5. The straight sets victory was Federer's fifth of the tournament, signaling to the rest of remaining field that they will need their 'A' game to get past the consummate champion.
Federer's relatively easy win over Soderling garnered the Swiss native his 16th career meeting with Djokovic. Federer holds a 10-5 advantage in the series, which includes wins at the 2007 US Open final as well as the 2008 and 2009 US Open semifinals. Djokovic has won three of their last six meetings, though, last taking Federer out at the Swiss Indoors championship match in November of 2009.
Djokovic, who defeated France's Gael Monfils 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, has procured just one win over Federer in the five Grand Slam meetings between the two players. The Serbian ousted Fed in the semifinals of the 2008 Australian Open in route to his first and only major title.
The fact that Djokovic has had success against Federer, albeit limited, should give him some confidence going into tomorrow's match. However, confidence or no, Djokovic knows that getting by the Basel product will not be easy, especially given the manner in which Federer is playing.
"I have been watching him play here in the tournament," Djokovic said. "He's playing maybe…the best tennis that he played in this [event]. Because he lost in the quarters of the French and in Wimbledon, some people think he's more vulnerable than ever. But I think he's actually playing really well."
