Top ranked Rafael Nadal reached the US Open semifinals for a third consecutive year after beating fellow Spaniard 
Fernando Verdasco 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Nadal had seven fewer winners in the match, but Verdasco had six double faults to Nadal's zero while also committing 25 more unforced errors. The straight sets victory brought Nadal's record to a perfect 10-0 against Verdasco.
Mikhail Youzhny, who presently ranks 14th in the ATP's men's singles rankings, had a more difficult time getting past his quarterfinals opponent, beating Stanislas Wawrinka 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Wawrinka produced 13 aces to Youzhny's two but was doomed by 71 unforced errors in the five set marathon. Youzhny's win matched his furthest advancement in 38 career Grand Slam events as he also made a semifinals appearance at the 2006 US Open.
The 28 year old Youzhny has had modest success in his 11 previous meetings with Nadal, garnering four wins. The Moscow native has lost four of his last five against the Spaniard, though, with his last win coming in the finals at the Aircel Chennai Open in India in 2008. The two players have met four times on a Grand Slam stage, where Nadal owns a 3-1 record, losing only to Youzhny in the quarterfinals of the 2006 US Open.
Despite his four wins against Nadal, Youzhny has no illusions about what it will take to upset the 24 year old Manacor product.
"He's No. 1; he [has] won two Grand Slams [this year]; he [is] playing really, really well; it will be very tough for me," Youzhny said.
