Rafael Nadal put himself in position to win his first US Open and complete a career Grand Slam yesterday with an easy 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 straight sets win over Russian Mikhail Youzhny. Nadal, who hit 23 winners in the match, scored on 39 of his 50 successful first serves. Youzhny also aided the ATP's top ranked player by committing 33 unforced errors.
Nadal, who has won eight of the 10 Grand Slam finals that he has reached, last beat Djokovic on a hard court at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The 24 year old has four wins against the Serb since that victory, all of them coming on clay surfaces.
