The North Carolina Tar Heels, who have not played since Tuesday night, will host ACC rival Virginia today at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill. North Carolina moved into first place in the ACC this week when they beat Maryland and the Blue Devils subsequently fell at Clemson. While the two squads are tied in conference record at 6-2, the Tar Heels have the better overall record at 20-2. If Duke gets past Miami today and North Carolina wins their tune up against the Cavaliers this afternoon, the rival schools will be poised for a head-to-head battle for first place in the ACC on February 11th at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Tar Heels shot their way to a 108-91 win on February 3rd against the Terps in Chapel Hill. Maryland played to a statistical equal of Carolina in almost every major category except three point shooting. Roy Williams team was deadly from beyond the arc, nailing 16-of-25 attempts for a cool 64 percent. Forward Wayne Ellington lead the barrage by connecting on 7-of-9 three point attempts. He finished the game with 34 points and nine rebounds.

The Tar Heels are 10-1 at home this year and come into today's game on a six game winning streak. They also rank second in the nation in points per game at 93.1 and first in the nation in rebounds per game (42.8) and assists per game (19.5).

Unfortunately for Cavaliers fans, Virginia has struggled almost as much as North Carolina has succeeded. Their 1-6 ACC record and 7-11 overall mark have them ranked 11th in the 12 team conference. Virginia has reached has reached new levels of ineptitude in their last five outings, posting an average of just 65 points per game while giving up 79.8.

The Cavaliers extended their current losing streak to six games on Wednesday night when they lost 70-80 against Boston College at home. They shot an abysmal 33 percent from the field against the Eagles, but compounded that struggle by hitting just one of their 14 three point attempts. The lone bright spot in the loss was guard Sylven Landesberg's 32 points (13-of-23 from the field, 6-of-6 free throws).
