 Rapper Akon has been surrounded with tons of bad press in recent weeks. His most recent appearance in the media came after he threw a 15-year-old into the crowd of the KFEST radio concert in upstate New York. Akon has yet to be arrested, but an investigation is still pending. Bodog.com has betting odds of -130 that Akon will be arrested before the end of 2007.
Akon’s troubles started last month when he simulated a rape of a 15-year-old girl on stage during his concert in Trinidad. He reportedly invited the Danah Alleyne onto the stage to join a dance competition. Alleyne won the contest and was under the impression she won a “trip to Africa.” However, the “trip to Africa” turned out to be a sexual encounter with Akon. The Trinidad Express said the rapper was "turning, twisting and even flipping [the girl's] body," while "mimicking sexual positions" and sandwiching the girl with the assistance of another performer.”
Verizon immediately fired Akon and dropped their sponsorship for the Gwen Stefani tour in which Akon is the opening act.
A couple weeks later, Akon was performing at the KFEST radio concert when a boy in the audience threw something at him. Akon’s bodyguards brought the boy on stage. The Smack That rapper grabbed the boy, lifted him into the air, and threw him back into the audience. The entire incident was caught on tape.
Akon’s lawyer made the following statement denying his client committed a crime:
"Given the information that we have reviewed to date, it does not appear to us that Akon was involved in any criminal conduct whatsoever. We are prepared to fully cooperate with any law enforcement agency that may be investigating this incident. We are confident that after a thorough investigation it will be apparent that no criminal prosecution of Akon is warranted."
No charges have been filed, yet.
