Philadelphia Eagles vs Arizona Cardinals NFL Playoff Picks

by Matt Foust on Sunday, January 18th, 2009

The Philadelphia Eagles are in the desert today for an NFC Championship clash with the Arizona Cardinals. The game is set to kick off at 3:00pm ET at the University of Phoenix Stadium and will be broadcast live on FOX. Both teams are riding hot streaks into this huge game, but only one squad will earn the right to play in Super Bowl XLIII. NFL Picks at Sportsbook.com are projecting that team to be the Eagles, who are currently listed as a -3.5 against the spread road favorite. Philadelphia Eagles vs Arizona Cardinals NFL Playoff Picks

Eagles Breakdown: Not many people expected Philadelphia to reach the NFC Championship due to the up and down nature they displayed during the regular season; however, they have shed the Jekyll and Hyde tendencies that plagued them most of the year and are now the hottest team in the league. Philly won four of their last five regular season games to reach the post-season, and have won six of their last seven games including their two road playoff wins.

The Eagles went into New York last weekend and beat the Giants for the second time this season. The 23-11 divisional round win further illustrated Philadelphia's defensive prowess, which has been the spring board for their late season run. Jimmy Johnson's defense has held teams to an average of just 12.1 points per game in their last seven outings.

Donovan McNabb and company are 5-4-1 this year on the road, where they average 21.5 per game.  They beat the Cardinals on Thanksgiving night 48-20 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, but Arizona was the last team to score over 14 points against them.

Cardinals Breakdown: Arizona was another long shot to reach the NFC finale, given the way they closed out the regular season, but they have found a spark since the playoffs kicked off. The Cardinals played well enough in the season's early going to wrap up the NFC West by week 11, but they took a vacation after securing the title. Ken Whisenhunt's troops managed just two wins in their final six games, giving up an average of 33 points per game in that stretch.

Arizona did win their final regular season game against the Seahawks, though, and they carried the momentum of that victory into the playoffs. After getting by Atlanta as a home dog in the Wild Card round, the Cards shocked the world by pounding the Panthers 33-13 in Charlotte last Saturday night.

Quarterback Kurt Warner, who is sporting a 93.9 playoff passer rating, has led his team to a 7-2 record this year at the University of Phoenix Stadium. Arizona is averaging an impressive 30.2 points per game at home and giving up 22.4 per game in return.

NFL Playoff Picks Betting Trend: The Over is 4-1 in the Cardinals last five games at home with a spread between 0 and 3.5.
