2009 Super Bowl Results Scores Spreads Odds Game Notes

The 2009 Super Bowl Results, Scores & Game Notes are in and Point-Spreads.com would like to congratulate the Pittsburgh Steelers defeating the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 in a nail biter that came down to the last play of the game. The victory is the first time in NFL History that a franchise has won 6 Super Bowl Titles and head coach Mike Tomlin is the youngest every to win a Super Bowl Title. 2009 Super Bowl MVP was Santonio Holmes which was listed at 15 to 1 odds to take the honor.

Kickoff was at approximately 6:30 PM EST from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.  The original line opened at Sportsbook.com with the Pittsburgh Steelers being a -7 point favorite over Arizona. Tons of late money came in on the Pittsburgh Steelers driving the line down from 7 to 6.5 points just before kickoff.

The Steelers called "tails" when General David Petraeus tossed the coin right before the 2009 Super Bowl started. It landed on "heads", Cardinals won the coin toss keeping the NFC's winning streak alive making it the 12th consecutive year the NFC has won the coin toss. The Cardinals elected to take the ball in the second half of the 2009 Super Bowl.

1st Quarter – Super Bowl Results
Ben Roethlisberger's first pass was to a wide open Hines Ward for a gain of 38 yards on a bootleg. 21 yard strike to tight end Heath Miller for 21 yards to set the Steelers 1st and Goal at the one yard line.  The Cardinals defensive line got penetration on first down pushing the Steelers back to the 5 yard line.  On the second down of the first series, Willie Parker got the ball back to the original line of scrimmage on the one to make it 3rd and Goal at the one.  Ben rolled out on a bootleg but decided to tuck the ball in and run but was stopped on the one foot line making it 4th and Goal. The Steelers field goal kicker Jeff Reed hit a 19 yard kick to put Pittsburgh on the board first in Super Bowl XLIII and take the lead 3-0.

The Arizona Cardinals drew a holding call on their opening drive in Super Bowl XLIII and the call along with a fumble put quarterback Kurt Warner in a 3rd and 17 that they could not convert.  Cardinals punter Ben Graham became the first Australian to play in the Super Bowl.

The Steelers systematically drove down the field in their second offensive possession of the game until he reached 2nd and Goal.

2nd Quarter -  2009 Super Bowl Result

After resuming play in the second quarter, the Steelers were able to push the ball into the end zone with the touchdown scored by short yardage specialist Gary Russell to put Pittsburgh up 10-0.

In Arizona's second possession, quarterback Kurt Warner threw a 45 yard catch to wide receiver Anquan Boldin to set up a touchdown by tight end Ben Patrick for the first score of the game, touchdown Cardinals making the score 10-7.

The Steelers were unable to answer the Cardinals score and were forced to punt by the Arizona defense and costly penalties.  Return specialist Steve Breaston had a monster return back to the 42 yard line of the Steelers but a chop block penalty pushed the starting point back to their 49 yard line.  The Steelers defense sacked Warner on 2nd and 19 to make it 3rd and 22.  The Cardinals decide to take a timeout with 2:39 left until Half Time.  The Steelers defense held and forced a punt.  The Cardinals defense tipped Ben's pass and the secondary intercepted the ball right at the two minute warning.

Kurt Warner converted a 3rd down by dumping a pass off to Hightower who surged for the first down.  Time out is taken with 59 seconds left before the half.  It took 29 minutes before Larry Fitzgerald made his first reception, which was a first down down to the Steelers 12 yard line with Pittsburgh taking at time out with 43 seconds left in the half. Boldin catches a first down pass and takes it to the 2nd yard line with a 18 seconds left on the clock.  Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison intercepts Warner on the goal line and ran the ball back 100 yards for a touchdown, however there was a penalty flag.  The penalty was on the return so the touchdown counted making the final score of the first half 17-7 after another Jeff Reed point after kick.

The Pittsburgh Steelers covered their first half line which was -3.5 points and the OVER 23.5 1st Half hit.

Bruce Springsteen rocked Super Bowl XLIII for the Half Time Festivities.

Kurt Warner and the Arizona Cardinals offense started the second half with the football and attempted to re-establish the offense.  Edgerrin James slipped a tackle to run for a first down in the opening series of the second half and had a second run for another 7 yards bringing up a 2nd and 3 yards.  Third consecutive running play to James which results in a tough earned first down. Kurt Warner looses the football on a 3rd and 6 play around the 50 yard line which was picked up by the Steelers defense.  The play was being challenged by Arizona which resulted in the ball being returned to the Cardinals after ruling it was an incomplete pass.  The time out was returned to head coach Ken Wisenhunt.  The Cardinals punted to Santonio Holmes which was fair caught at the 18 yard line of the Steelers.

On the Steelers opening possession on offense, Pittsburgh converted on a key third down by throwing a successful first down pass to wide receiver Hines Ward. On the very next player, Roethlisberger scrambled and threw the ball away but the Cardinals defense was flagged for roughing the passer making the new line of scrimmage in Arizona territory. Holmes ran for a 15 yard gain bringing the ball down to the Cardinals 22 yard line.

Heath Miller dropped a touchdown pass on a slant just in front of the end zone on 2nd and Goal on the 9 yard line. The Cardinals defense put pressure on Big Ben and he threw the ball away just in time.  The Steelers place kicker Jeff Reed hit another point after attempt making the score 20-7 however Arizona ran into the place holder and received 1st and Goal from the 4 yard line.  Roethlisberger kept the ball on 3rd and Goal but came up short.  Steelers Jeff Reed hit a 21 yard field goal making the score 20-7 Pittsburgh lead.

The Cardinals were unable to convert a 3rd and 14 and were forced to punt in their first drive of the 4th quarter.  Timmons almost blocked Arizona’s 27 yard punt.  The short punt set up Pittsburgh in great starting field position.  On the first play, Cardinals Rod Hood held Hines Ward giving the Steelers 1st and 10 on their own 48 yard line. Darnel Docket stepped up on defense and sacked Roethlisberger forcing the Steelers to punt.

Arizona took over on their own 18 yard line and systematically drove down the field and took a time out with 8:22 left in the 4th quarter from the 5 yard line on 2nd and Goal.  Hightower scrambles after catching a middle screen to the 1 yard line making it 3rd and Goal. Fitzgerald catches touch down from Kurt Warner in an acrobatic jump over the defender to bring the score to 20:14 with 7:33 to go in the 4th quarter.

Dockett sacks Roethlisberger again making the Steelers have a 3rd and 16 from their own 18 yard line. Heath Miller was unable to convert on a swing pass forcing Pittsburgh to punt with 5:45 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Arizona takes over at their own 25 yard line.

Ike Taylor gets flagged for a penalty after Boldin caught a pass from Warner for a first down.  The additional yardage got the Cardinals line of scrimmage on the 49 of the Steelers.  Breaston catches a reception from Warner for a 25 yard gain putting Arizona on the 26 of Pittsburgh.  After a holding penalty it put Warner in a 3rd and 20 and he threw an incompletion. With 3:36 seconds left.  Arizona punted and stopped the ball on the Steelers 2 yard line with 3:26 left but after a penalty on Harrison the ball was placed on the one yard line. Willie Parker almost gets stopped on a rush up the middle but was successful at getting out of the backfield to land on the one yard line bringing up a 3rd and 10 on the one.  Cardinals are charged with their 2nd time out with 3:04 left in the 4th quarter.  Santonio Holmes catches a 19 yard bomb but it was called back for holding causing the Steelers giving up a safety to make the score 20:16.

Warner takes over after the safety from his own 35 yard line with 2:53 left in 4th quarter. Fitzgerald scores after catching a slant pass over the middle and breaking free for a 64 yard touchdown giving the Cardinals their first lead of the night 20:23 with 2:37 left in the 4th quarter.

The Steelers take over on their 22 yard line with 2:30 left in the game.  The Steelers are backed up 10 yards after holding, 1st down and 20 yards from there own 12 yard line.  Santonio Holmes catches a pass getting the Steelers to the 27 yard line.  It’s the two minute warning.

Holmes picks up a huge first down on 3rd and 6 to keep the drive alive with 1:31 left. The Steelers use their second time out with 1:02 left in the game after Roethlisberger pulled the ball up and ran up the middle to avoid taking a sack. Holmes comes up with a huge reception getting the Steelers down to the 5 yard line of Arizona.  Pittsburgh takes their final time out of the game with :49 seconds left in the game 1st and Goal.

Holmes misses a pass from Roethlisberger on 1st down with :43 seconds left.  Holmes catches a dart in the back of the end zone giving the Steelers the lead with under :35 seconds left in the game making the score 27-23.  OVER backers just hit.

With “22 seconds left, the Cardinals take a time out after completing a pass up at their 44 yard line for 1st and 10.  They take their final time out with :15 seconds left Warner scrambles and tries to throw the ball down the field but it was stripped and recovered by the Steelers. Game over, the Pittsburgh Steelers are the 2009 Super Bowl Champions.
