The 2009 NFL Draft will take place today at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City. The first pick, which has already been determined, will take place at 4:00pm ET and be broadcast live on ESPN. Ohio State running Chris "Beanie" Wells is projected by Sportsbook.com to be the first running back selected in the draft. 2009 NFL Draft: Chris Beanie Wells odds at Sportsbook.com favor Wells to be taken with the 16th pick or higher at -400 moneyline odds. Chris "Beanie" Wells is generally regarded as the best running back prospect in this weekend's draft. He was not only a productive performer in three seasons at one of college football's most prestigious programs, Ohio State, he also displayed the kind of instinctive running that NFL teams crave. He proved to be the type of back that kind find the initial opening, hit it with speed, and then make defenders miss at the next level. Wells racked up 3382 yards and 30 touchdowns in his time as a Buckeye and averaged over 5.4 yards per carry in his three years at Ohio State. The 6'1" 237lbs. back had 1197 last season as a junior, despite missing three games with a foot sprain. His sophomore season, however, proved to be his best as he rushed for 1609 yards on 274 attempts. Wells had four multi-touchdowns games that season and he compiled over 200 yards on two occasions (against Michigan and Michigan State). At the conclusion of his sophomore campaign, Wells was voted first team All Big 10, second team All American (Rivals), and team Most Valuable Player. The Buckeyes went 33-6 with Wells on campus and played for two BCS National Championships (lost to Florida in 2006 and LSU in 2007). The Akron, Ohio native had a decent NFL combine, but he did not post overwhelming numbers. He ran a 4.59 40 yard dash, pushed out 25 reps on the bench press drill, posted a 33.5' vertical leap, and hit 10' 8" in the broad jump (first among running backs). Wells and Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno are expected to be the first two tailbacks taken today, but the odds makers at Sportsbook.com like Wells to be taken first. The odds on Moreno going ahead of "Beanie" are currently listed at +150. Sportsbook.com 2009 NFL Draft: Chirs Beanie Wells 16th Pick or Higher -400 13th Pick or Lower +500 14th Pick +125 (New Orleans Saints) 15th Pick +800 (Houston Texans) |
