Being frank, the 2016 NFL Week 1 schedule is not the most glamorous as far as intriguing matchups are concerned. Vikings versus the Titans anyone? How about the Browns and Eagles tangling in Philly? The Lions and Colts tickle your fancy? It is not completely devoid of interest, though, and from a betting perspective, making money is making money regardless of who is playing.
Speaking of intrigue, the 2016 season does open with a nice grudge match as Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers look to avenge their Super Bowl 50 loss to the Broncos. The championship rematch is scheduled for Thursday, September 8 at Mile High (7:30pm CT, NBC) and Bovada’s latest 2016 NFL Week 1 Point Spreads have the Panthers favored at -1 against the spread.
The NBC Sunday Night Football opener is also one of interest as the Patriots travel to Arizona to face the Cardinals. New England will, in all likelihood, be without Tom Brady in the high profile clash as his four-game Deflategate suspension was recently reinstated by a United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
While Brady is rumored to be seeking further recourse against the suspension, his likely absence from the game has resulted in the Cardinals being favored at 5.5 against the spread. The last time the Pats caught more points on the road was January of 2010 (+7.5 in a 27-34 loss at Houston).
The back-to-back Monday Night Football lineup that has become the league’s Week 1 custom features the Steelers and Redskins squaring off in the nation’s capitol and the newly relocated L.A. Rams taking on division rival San Francisco in Santa Clara. Pittsburgh opened as a -3.5 road favorite while Los Angeles is laying two against the 49ers.
