2011 Super Bowl Lines: The NFL season seldom breaks down according to plan or prognostication, and one need look no further than last season to validate that axiom. The Steelers were one of the favorites to reach Super Bowl XLIV after beating the Cardinals in the championship the previous year; however, Pittsburgh failed to even qualify for the playoffs, going 9-7 to finish third in the AFC North. With that in mind, Point-Spreads has pinpointed a few teams in SBGglobal.com's 2011 Super Bowl Lines that are dark horse candidates for a Lombardi run.
Houston Texans (+2500): The Texans ranked fourth in the league in yards per game and 10th in scoring last year, proving
they have the offense in place to make a storng playoff push. The defense, which has been Houston's Achilles heel, actually made strides last season, ranking a respectable 13th in yards per game allowed and 17th in points allowed. The Texans added some quality pieces through the draft and lost little in the way of free agency. So, while the schedule is harsh, Houston could be poised for a breakout year.
Cincinnati Bengals (+2400): Yes, the Bengals won the AFC North last year, but how many people thought they were for real? Obviously not many, since most pundits have them finishing behind both the Ravens and Steelers this season. However, Cincinnati employed the same type of formula that the Jets did a season ago and they appear to be in even better shape this season. The team has a strong defense (sixth in points allowed) and its lackluster offense added wide receiver Antonio Bryant through free agency and tight end Jermaine Gresham through the draft.
Carolina Panthers (+4400): Carolina has a distinct pattern under John Fox of following up a down or mediocre year with a good one. The lone exception since 2003 being an 8-8 mark in 2006 followed by a 7-9 tally in 2007. The Panthers are certainly flying under the radar this offseason after cutting longtime quarterback Jake Delhomme and trading the face of the defense, Julius Peppers. But this team closed out last season by winning four of its last five games and there are still a number of attractive pieces in place. Do not be surprised if the Panthers make it to the playoffs and make a little noise once there.
