Score Week 1 of the NFL season a huge victory for the sports bettors at . The betting public’s usual trend of consistently backing the favorites paid off in huge dividends as only 4 underdogs covered. With the early action piling in, it appears as if once again, the bettors are putting their faith in the favorites for week 2. And just like last week, the betting action on many of these games is extremely one-sided.Of the 13 favorites that the majority of early sports bettors are backing, a staggering 90+% are putting their cash on the Cincinnati Bengals laying the 7 points, Indianapolis Colts laying 7), New Orleans Saints laying 3, Dallas Cowboys -3.5 and Seattle Seahawks -2.5. This habit of backing favorites made the betting public rich in 2005 when only 42% of underdogs covered. This strategy blew up in their face last season when only 43% of favorites covered. With 16 weeks left to go, it is definitely worth keeping an eye on whether the 2007 season will once again be the year of the dog or the bettors and favorites will continue their momentum from Week 1.
The favorite that is getting the most love from early sports bettors is the New Orleans Saints as they head to their NFC South rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A mind-blowing 96% of Sportsbook.com sports bettors that are taking advantage of -105 juice Friday, feel that the Saints will rebound nicely after their pathetic performance in Indianapolis.
Why the infatuation with the Saints? Well, for one, they played last Thursday; thus having a couple extra days to rest and prepare. Secondly, the Buccaneers scoring offense ranked 31st in the NFL scoring just 13.2 points per game. Despite signing Jeff Garcia, the Bucs’ offense struggled yet again in Week 1 only managing to put 6 points of the board. Additionally, the running back “Cadillac” Williams is banged up and will most likely be a game time decision.
New Orleans’ offense also fell on their face in their opener. Although, unlike Tampa, the Saints’ offense was outstanding last year ranking tops in the league. All the key components return so most believe their Week 1 performance was nothing more than “opening night jitters”. After reading all of this, it is hard to blame the public for backing the Saints. Just keep in mind, unlike last year, the Saints won’t be sneaking up on anyone this season.
With reduced juice Fridays (-105), there is no reason not to get your bets in before the weekend rush. By monitoring Sportsbook.com’s “Betting Trends” section, you can follow who the public and professional sports bettors are backing. Once you can determine this, you can better predict point spreads changes, thus getting the most advantageous line. For example, if the public keeps pounding the Saints in this match-up, the betting line is sure to move a point at least.
