Just three weeks remain in the NFL season and the playoff landscape is starting to take shape. Suffice it to say the postseason is going to look a little bit different than what many anticipated back in August. Updated 2016 NFL Playoff odds are favoring the Patriots and Panthers to win their respective conferences (+125 and +160 odds, respectively) and they are Super Bowl 50 co-favorites at +375 odds apiece.
While New England figured prominently in Bovada’s July Super Bowl projections, drawing a +900 line to win the Lombardi Trophy, Carolina was considered a middle of the pack contender at +4500 odds.
While Cam Newton and company have been a pleasant surprise, teams like Indianapolis, Philadelphia and Baltimore have fallen well below expectations. The Colts and Eagles were +800 and +2800 championship picks in the summer, but they are now, in spite of both teams still being in the playoff hunt, +5000 Super Bowl picks. The Ravens, meanwhile, opened at +1700 odds to win the Lombardi; they are now no longer listed on Bovada’s Super Bowl odds board.
The Cowboys are another major disappointment, thanks in large part to the near season long absence of Tony Romo. Dallas, a +1500 selection prior to the start of the season, enters Week 15 at +20000 Super Bowl odds.
Joining the Panthers in the ‘Moving on up’ category, though, are Cardinals, Chiefs and Bengals. Arizona is presently tied with NFC West rival Seattle as a third pick to win the championship at +650 odds. Kansas City and Cincinnati are getting +1600 and +2000 odds to do so. Those three clubs opened the year at +3000, +3000 and +5000 Super Bowl prices, respectively.
In addition to the Patriots, Panthers, Cardinals and Seahawks, the Steelers, Packers and Broncos are also considered viable Super Bowl candidates at +750, +1000 and +1200 odds.
