Prosecutors have given NFL star Michael Vick two not so appealing options in his dog fighting conspiracy case. Either accept a plea to serve one year in federal prison on dog fighting conspiracy charges or face an additional charge of under the federal Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, known as RICO.
Vick was suppose to accept the one year deal by 9 AM EST today but there has not been a statement made to the public yet at the time Point-Spreads.com went to press with this story.
Two of Michael Vick's co-defendants pleaded guilty to the dog fighting conspiracy charges today setting up the high profile quarterback as scape goat.
The new RICO charge would be considered by a grand jury that convenes Monday and if conviction under the RICO charge, Vick could be looking at up to 20 years in prison.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has taken a wait and see approach, trying to refrain from judgement until all the facts of the situation are out in the open. Goodell has barred Michael Vick from attention Falcons training camp or playing for Atlanta until the investigation is finished. SportsBetting.com has the Atlanta Falcons at 60 to 1 odds to win the 2008 Super Bowl.
Sentencing for Vick's co-defendants in the case is set for Novermber 30th, 2007. Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District in Virginia on today. Phillips was taken directly to jail after his court appearance because he tested positive for a controlled substance while he was out on bail.
The first co-defendant to break away from the others, Tony Taylor, accepted a plea deal July 30 and agreed to cooperate fully with prosecutors. Taylor is looking at receiving up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced on December 14th, 2007.
