2009 NHL All-Star Game PredictionThe 2009 NHL All-star game hits the ice tonight, Sunday Jan 25, at the home of the Montreal Canadiens where the Eastern Conference All-stars take on the Western Conference All-stars. Both sides are split at 2-2 SU in their last four meetings. NHL oddsmakers at Sportsbook.com have the East as -124 moneyline favs over the West with the over/under set at 16.5 goals. The Eastern Conference comes into the game as the defending champs. The East also holds home ice advantage and has seven 20 goals scorers in their lineup.  Sidney Crosby will be out for the Eastern squad, due to a knee injury, and Martin St. Louis will take his place in the lineup. The Montreal Canadiens will be well represented in their home barn with four players voted in as starters. Carey Price will start in goal for the East while Alex Kovalev will captain the team, Andre Markov and Mike Komisarek will patrol the blue line. Goalies Carey Price, Tim Thomas and Henrik Lundqvist represent the East.

The Western Conference squad’s starting lineup is loaded with Blackhawks and Ducks. Voted in for Chicago were forwards Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews and defenseman Brian Campbell. The rest of the starters are filled out by Anaheim, with forward Ryan Getzlaf, defenseman Scott Niedermayer. The West will not have a single member of the defending Stanley Cup Champions in the All-Star Game. Niklas Lidstrom and Pavel Datsyuk were both named to the Western Conference team but opted to skip the event. As a punishment they will sit out one Red Wing game. Goalies Roberto Luongo, J.S. Giguere and Nicklas Backstrom will backstop the West. Patrick Marleau is the only 20 goal weapon for the Western Conference.

In last year’s All-Star Game in Atlanta the East defeated the West 8-7. Since the East versus West format was brought back in 2003 the two conferences have each won twice. The over-under on the All-Star game has been set at 16.5. In the last 10 years the two teams have combined for more than 16 goals only twice. With a stacked crew of goalies on both sides look for this game to be low scoring.

The Bottom Line: The West doesn’t have the Red Wings representing and it’s going to hurt, the only thing that can save them are their goalies. Go with the East and under the 16.5 goals.
