Always Dreaming will continue his handler’s dreams of the colt becoming just the 13th Triple Crown winner when he takes to the Pimilco Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday evening. Post time in the 142nd running of the Preakness Stakes is set for 6:45pm ET; coverage of the 1-3/16 miles race, the shortest of the Triple Crown Series, will be provided by NBC. Always Dreaming is a -140 favorite to win the race according to Bovada’s latest 2017 Preakness Stake Odds.
A co-favorite to win the Run for the Roses, Always Dreaming powered his way to an easy victory in the slop at Churchill Downs nearly two weeks ago. The son of Bodemeister bested unlikely second place finisher Lookin at Lee by 2 ¾ lengths to give trainer Todd Pletcher his second Kentucky Derby win (2010 Super Saver).
The colt will face Lookin at Lee again on Saturday, as well as fellow Derby runners Classic Empire, Hence and Gunnevera. Those three colts are garnering +240, +600 and +1000 odds to win the Preakness Stakes, respectively. Lee, meanwhile, is lined at +1500 2017 Preakness Stakes Odds.
Classic Empire had won three of four races, including the Arkansas Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, prior to a fourth place run at Churchill Downs. It has a lot of ground to make up if it hopes to spoil Always Dreaming’s Triple Crown chances.
Pletcher, whose colt is set to jump from Gate 4 on Saturday night, likes the way Dreaming has recovered from the Derby.
“He’s shown us everything we were hoping for leading us back in two weeks,” Pletcher said. “Tank seems full. He seems eager to go. We’re just trying to keep him on the ground one more day.”
If Always Dreaming does perform as expected at Pimilco, he will not only maintain his Triple Crown hopes, but also give Pletcher his first Preakness Stakes victory.
In addition to the five previously mentioned horses, the Run for the Black Eyed Susans will also feature Conquest Mo Money (+700), Cloud Computing (+1200), Multiplier (+1500), Senior Investment (+4000), and Term of Art (+4500).
