UFC 109: It is the fight MMA fans have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for as UFC Hall of Famers Randy Couture and Mark Coleman meet in the Octagon for the first time. The two fighters, who crested 40 some time ago, are headlining UFC 109: Relentless tonight at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 11 fight card, which also features a middleweight battle between Nate Marquardt and Chael Sonnen, is scheduled to begin at 10:00pm ET and can be seen live on Pay-Per View. Randy Couture has nothing left to prove in mixed martial arts, but if his move to back to light heavyweight eventually  results in another title shot, "The Natural" may go down as the greatest fighter of all-time, in spite of his modest 17-10 career record. Since returning to the UFC in March of 2008, Couture is 1-2 with losses to heavyweights Brock Lesnar and Minotauro Nogueira. Those setbacks, along with the burgeoning size of the heavyweight contenders, prompted the 46 year old to return to the light heavyweight division. The change paid immediate dividends as Couture won a unanimous decision victory over Brandon Vera in November of last year. Now the former Oklahoma State wrestler has another hurdle to jump before thinking about getting in the cage with light heavyweight stalwarts Rashad Evans, "Rampage" Jackson, "Shogun" Rua, or Lyoto Machida. That hurdle would be former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Mark Coleman. "Mark is another classic matchup for me," Couture said. "Like Nogueira, this is a fight that was supposed to happen a long time ago and is finally now a reality. I look forward to testing my skills and fighting spirit against another UFC Hall of Fame fighter." Coleman, like Couture, just recently returned to the UFC, ending a decade long absence with a showdown against Mauricio Rua in January of 2009. That fight did not go according to plan for Coleman as the Brazillian soured his return with a third round TKO. However, the 45 year old Ohio native got back on track with a unanimous decision win over a much younger Stephan Bonnar at UFC 100 in July. Coleman, who won the PRIDE Open Weight Grand Prix in 2000, can improve his career record to 17-9 with a win over Couture this evening. He knows that will not be easy task, though, given Couture's heart and tremendous skill set. "Randy's definitely one of the greatest fighters of all-time, a man I respect greatly inside and outside the cage," Coleman said. "He's a true champion, a guy who's been able to get to the top, fall, and be able to climb back to the top. That's what really determines a champion." Marquardt has made his case largely in the Octagon, though, going 4-1 since Silva defeated him. The Colorado native's only loss in that stretch came via split decision in June of 2008 (Thales Leites).
