The most physical and grueling event of the Olympics starts, Tuesday Feb 23@2:00ET, as the Men’s 10,000m Speed Skating begins. The 5,000m was tough enough, but double that and your legs are burning and jelly like. Dutchman Sven Kramer recently won 5,000m gold in Vancouver and has a chance at double gold. Olympic oddsmakers at BETUS.com have the Dutch superstar Sven Kramer as -800 moneyline favorite to win gold at the 10,000m . After winning the 5000m speed skating race on the opening day of Olympic competition, Sven Kramer is an overwhelming favorite to win the 10,000m today in a race that has orange written all over it. Since the 1992 Albertville Games, only the great Johann Olav Koss of Norway has been able to break the Netherlands' golden hold over the distance. Beyond winning at the last three Olympics, the Dutch have earned seven of nine possible medals over the distance since the 1994 Lillehammer Games. Kramer has not been beaten in the event in three years, and his margins have been as impressive as his credentials, including the three last world titles and the world record. "With a good body, and good skills, you also need the right race mentality," Kramer's coach, Gerard Kemkers, said after Monday's training session. "And he has it in spades."
Kramer's toughest competition comes from another Dutchman Bob de Jong, who surprisingly won at the 2006 Torino Games. Rather than training counterclockwise like all skaters do, he waited until the oval was for him alone Monday and started skating several laps in the other direction. He did exactly the same four years ago in Torino during his last training, and he came away with gold the day after. Bob de Jong is listed as +500 moneyline underdog to win 10,000m gold.
Russian Ivan Skobrev has had a good Olympics so far with bronze in the 5000m and a surprising fourth place in the 1500m. Plus, he is ranked third in the world over the long distances. Ivan Skobrev is listed as +1400 moneyline underdog to win the 10,000m gold.
