The 29th version of the Irish Poker Open, one of the longest running No Limit Texas hold'em poker tournaments in Europe is scheduled to be played April 9th-13th 2009. It is the second longest in the world after the World Series of Poker and was first hosted by a well known Irish Bookmaker named Terry Rogers in 1981.
This years four-day Main Event starts on April 10th with the Main Event buy-in set to €3,200 + €300. This tournament is Europe's largest and a fixture on the international poker calendar. After Terry Rogers passing in 1999, the Irish Poker Open tournament which was originally held in Dublin’s Eccentric Club has been hosted by tournament director and poker player Liam Flood. This year the poker festival will return to Citywest Hotel, Dublin, which was the venue for the 2008 Irish Poker Open.
Last years Open included distinguished players of the likes of poker legend Doyle Brunson and his son Todd Brunson. Sorel Mizzi, Roland De Wolfe, Padraig Parkinson, World Series of Poker bracelet-winner Ciaran O'Leary, Dario Minieri and dozens of other poker professionals. PaddyPowerPoker.com added €200,000 to the prize pool, which took it past the €3 million mark.
English poker pro Neil Channing earned €801,400 and the Irish Poker Open title once he defeated local favorite Donal Norton heads up. Norton took home €420,000 for his 2nd place finish while Thomas Dunwoodie finished in 3rd place ahead of Tim Blake (4th), Kai Danilo Paulsen (5th) and Edwin Tournier (6th).
