We are almost a week and a half into the 2009 Major League Baseball season and odds makers at SBGglobal.com are predicting that the American League will emerge victorious in this year's World Series. The New York Yankees are the favorite at +250 moneyline odds and the Red Sox are close behind at +400 on the moneyline. 2009 World Series Betting Odds at SBGglobal.com like the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets in the National League; they are listed at +700 and +1000 respectively to win the 2009 Fall Classic. The Cubs return largely the same team that has won 182 games over the past two seasons. In 2008 they went 97-64 in route to their second consecutive NL Central title. Chicago scored 855 runs a season ago (second only to the Rangers 901) and had a league best +184 run differential. They are off to another good start this year, sitting at 5-2 through seven games and posting an average of over five runs per outing. Chicago bolstered their already potent offense by adding outfielder Milton Bradley and they strengthed their bullpen with the addition of former Marlin Kevin Gregg. The Mets, despite having missed the playoffs the last two seasons, are still viewed as the second strongest team in the National League. Obviously, the bookmakers feel that New York underachieved a year ago when they went 89-73 and finished second to the Phillies in the NL East. The Mets produced 799 runs last year and they should equal or surpass that total this season. David Wright continues to improve and he has plenty of protection with Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, and Jose Reyes in the lineup with him. The biggest question for the Mets continues to be their pitching staff. Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey, John Maine, and Oliver Perez make up a quality, but occasionally inconsistent one through four. The five spot, which looks like it will be filled by either Livan Hernandez or Tim Redding (currently on the DL), is suspect. Hernandez, though, while well past his prime, could prove valuable as an innings eater. The New York bullpen is presently without injured closer Billy Wagner, and his return is not a sure thing; however, the Mets should not miss him as they added former Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez as well as the Mariners old fireman, J.J. Putz. SBGglobal.com's 2009 World Series Betting Odds: New York Yankees +250 Boston Red Sox +400 Chicago Cubs +700 Los Angeles Angels +800 New York Mets +1000 |
